Delve deep down into the origins of our vineyard, in the heart of Tenerife
Still some Tenerifeños remember very well why the soils of Tabares4 are more precious than so many other....this is why...
Our hometown La Matanza de Acentejo is a town (population around 9000) near the north coast of Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. It is located 10 km east of Puerto de la Cruz, and about 20 km west of the island's capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Its name means "the Slaughter of Acentejo" in Spanish, and refers to the 1494 First Battle of Acentejo, lost by the Spanish.
In historic times before the arrival of the Spaniards, Acentejo was part of the menceyato (kingdom) of Taoro. The first and the second battles of Acentejo took place in 1494. The Spanish under Alonso Fernández de Lugo suffered a terrible defeat at this first battle, at the place now called La Matanza ("The Slaughter"). It occurred in present-day Barranco de San Antonio, which the Guanches called Farfan. The second battle resulted in a victory for the Spaniards, in which the town of La Victoria de Acentejo was founded.
High on the natural plateau of Los Nateros, where part of the battle was fought, our vineyards are located now. Is that why the bottom is so red? is that why our soil is so fertile?

About our vineyard
The 1st vineyard of 1,25 ha was established in 2004, at a height of 690-700m, on the west side of the Reventon barranco, the natural barrier between the more humid and misty El Sauzal-area and the moisture Victoria-Santa Ursula valley. Where we are, the soil is completely copper red, with large pieces of lava rocks in the upper surface, volcanic, sandy clay deep down, soil that can buffer lots of rain water in a natural way.
This plot is just a 100m below the sweet Chesnut area, where also the famous Papas Negras (papas arugadas) are grown and where there are natural water caves allover.
On the commercial side, On Tenerife itself, we were inspired by Belgian expats, by the Belgian wine club on Tenerife, by our colleagues winegrowers and befriended restaurateurs. We discovered a treasure trove of 'wines undiscovered by the general public' on the island, often from small top-bodegas that are too small to handle export on their own.
That is why we made an alliance with 15 colleague bodegas, organized a 40’ shipping container and imported a beautiful range of Canary/Tenerife wines for the first time, direction Belgium. All together more than 70 wines, almost all 'limited editions', of each and every bodega that wine on which they want to focus attention to and with whom they want to open the market with in the north of Europe.
